With the improvement of the Yangtze River’s traffic capacity and the completion & operation of a batch of logistic ports, Chongqing has become the only city with class 1 channels, 5,000-ton-class deep water port, class 1 water transportation port and bonded port area in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, according to Chongqing Transport Commission on August 23, 2010.
Since the Three Gorges Reservoir was completed, the annual growth rate for many water transport indexes such as the water transport cargo volume and the rotation volume of freight transport, etc. has reached 20% respectively.
In addition, with the operation of a batch of 5,000-ton-class large, specialized and mechanized ports, from 2002 to 2009, the cargo handling capacity of Chongqing ports had increased from 49,000,000 to 115,000,000 tons while the container handling capacity had increased by 1,710,000 from 55,000 standard containers.
